The metal structure is probably the hardest part, since each lightsaber is different from the next. If you own the DVDs, find a good spot where a lightsaber if fully visible (zoom in if necissary) and make a pencil sketch of the basic shape. It helps a lot for reference, and it's also easier if you're only making part of the saber, instead of the whole thing.
As for metal textures . . . lots of grays and whites and gradients. And references. (those help sooooo much)
And for the beam, use a rectangular marquee for the length and such. Once you have it in a nice spot, fill it with white. Then duplicate that layer so the copy is on top of the original. Depending on how big you want the saber, use a Gaussian Blur (I used 12 pixels for mine since it was close up). Do the same with the copy (I used 10 pixels). Add an Outer Glow on each layer with 100% opacity, same color, and make sure that the gradient style is color to transparent. Adjust the beam size if it's too big.
Big thing to keep in mind is to have the beam layers below the actual handle layer, otherwise it'll screw you up big time.
